From Horror Pain Gore Death Productions comes the latest from Pennsylvania black metal trio Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus titled Synkka Tuuli. Chances are you'll feel like you've been through a painful, gory death after getting through this one, as the band just pummel you from start to finish with relentless, raw, primal black metal. I mean, this is as underground sounding as it gets, the production dark & murky in spots, especially on the two savage openers "Ylittäen Jäätyneen Pohjoisen (I) & (II) ", but all of a sudden the band throws the lovely acoustic guitar & piano drenched "Itämeri Anomalia" as well as the spooky effects of "Arktinen Välisoitto ", and you have some brief breaks from all the pummeling. Vocals are way down in the mix, and are basically harsh, agonizing screams, howls, and moans, not very well done but I guess it matches what they are trying to do here. The title track is actually the most powerful piece, with some excellent guitar riffs, but the drums sound like they were recorded in a garage and the ominous moaning is just awful, which is a shame because it's otherwise a decent enough song. There's probably going to be a limited audience for stuff like this, but give the band credit for sticking to their guns and delivering some 'necro' sounds that seem like they are crawling up from the grave.
