Following a string of stellar solo albums Canadian vocalist James LaBrie has promptly returned with another release. Of course James is best known for his stellar input on Ayreon's The Human Equation or some of you may have heard him rocking out with that obscure group who call themselves Dream Theater? Nah didn't think so haha. I Will Not Break is the title of this EP and it's also the hard hitting closing track from one of 2013's best releases Impermanent Resonance.
So what we have is the nine song collection below consisting of enjoyable bonus tracks and different mixes of other numbers from LaBrie's last two releases Static Impulse and Impermanent Resonance.
"I Will Not Break" – Impermanent Resonance album track.
"Unraveling" - Impermanent Resonance bonus track.
"Why" - Impermanent Resonance bonus track.
"Coming Home" - Alternate mix Static Impulse bonus track.
"Jekyll Or Hyde" - Demo version Static Impulse bonus track - Composer/Keyboardist Matt Guillory appears on vocals.
"Just Watch Me" - Demo version Static Impulse bonus track - Composer/Keyboardist Matt Guillory appears on vocals.
"I Tried" - Jason Miller re-mix of Static Impulse album track.
"Over The Edge" - Mutrix re-mix of Static Impulse album track.
"Euphoric" - NeonGenesis re-mix of Static Impulse album track.
DJ's Jason Miller, Mutrix and NeonGenesis took the original Static Impulse versions of "I Tried", "Over The Edge" and "Euphoric" remixing their respective tracks into the those that are available here for the first time now in dub step / electronica versions. The three songs have actually adapted very well to that significant change with "I Tried" staying closest to the original. While I can't deny my preference for those originals I don't mind these alterations, and it's not like they have they ditched the original recordings incorporating them into their takes.
I suppose the question is that if you already own those versions of Static Impulse and Impermanent Resonance with the added tracks then is I Will Not Break a worthwhile purchase? Well there is the extra content to tempt you with, and sure for those that don't have those bonus songs which give you an appealing taste of the heavy and lighter sides of LaBrie's solo work then here's your chance to get a copy with those and more. Overall I Will Not Break is an interesting and varied release, LaBrie's solo releases continue to see him taking a different musical path to Dream Theater one that I hope he stays on. Though to make this EP even more appealing I wouldn't have objected to the inclusion of some totally new material.
