Kennedy Veil, The: Trinity of Falsehood
Here's the sophomore release from the Sacramento, California death metal band The Kennedy Veil. I never listened to the band's first album, the 2011 release The Sentence of their Conqueror, but this album is strong and fast and heavy, a great introduction to a new leader in death metal. Fans of the first album will want to check this one out, especially since there's a new vocalist—the promo materials call him a "new throat—named Taylor Wientjes. Alongside him, KC Childers plays guitar, Gabe Seeber plays drums, and Shawn Peterson plays bass. Together, these guys play a tight and fast brand of extreme death metal, filled with plenty of technical guitar passages and bass lines that pop out at just the right times. This is a band that could easily share the stage with bands like Nile, Morbid Angel, and Decapitated.
The album offers its best tracks right away. Both "Ad Noctum" and "Eulogy of the Divine" show off everything these guys do right—rapid-fire drums, technical guitar passages, clear and heavy bass lines, and a solid vocal performance. Even though I preferred these tracks over most of the others, the album never steers away from its lean, no-frills, brand of technical death metal. As the band puts it: "No throwbacks, no breakdowns, no wanking, no trends." That's a perfect description. With bands like this, death metal is in good hands. Even the cover art sets the perfect mood of mystery and menace. Most bands claim to be tough, to be heavy, and to be the real deal. Unlike some other bands, though, The Kennedy Veil, is precisely just as crushing and powerful as they claim to be. Listen to this album.
