Prisma Circus: Reminiscences

Prisma Circus is a heavy rock/psychedelic/blues band from Barcelona, Spain, and Reminiscences is their debut full-length CD for World in Sound. Comprised of Alejandro Carmona Blanco (Drums / Percussion), Joaquín Escudero Arce (Bass / Vocals / Percussion / Keyboards ), and Oscar García Albizu (Guitars), the trio deliver some truly chilling '70s sounds on this 8 song affair. If you love some of the retro sounds created by acts such as Horisont, Blues Pills, Graveyard, Witchcraft, and Zodiac, chances are Reminiscences is an album that you will want to put on your immediate radar.

Plenty of scorching guitar licks from Oscar García Albizu throughout this album, who seems to have studied quite a bit of Jimi Hendrix, Frank Marino, Robin Trower, and Jimmy Page. Look for some hot wah-wah solos and meaty riffs on heavy, blues based rockers "The Mirror" and "John Doe's Paranoia", while he goes for a more psychedelic vibe on the atmospheric "Born in a Red House". Alejandro Carmona Blanco's busy drum fills drive the hard rock freakout that is "Napalm", an instrumental featuring plenty of drum solos and acid tinged wah-wah guitar excursions. Not to be left out, Joaquín Escudero Arce lets his bass do the talking on the groove laden "Asylum's gate", a shuffling, bluesy, heavy rocker, and his insistent vocals are quite effective on the bruising "Onyx Star", one of the hardest rocking tracks on the album that almost reminds of a marriage between early Black Sabbath and Cream. You'll be transported back to 1970 with the wonderful "Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man)", as textured riffing, fiery guitar solos, and busy rhythms bring to mind vintage Humble Pie, Grand Funk Railroad, Robin Trower, and Cactus.

Some great psychedelic artwork adorns the digipack of Reminiscences, further adding to the vintage vibe that surrounds this entire album. So, dim the lights, turn on your lava lamp, spark up what you got, and indulge in the great early '70s sounds that Prisma Circus have created here. Glorious stuff.
