Sonar: Static Motion
The quartet of Stephen Thelen, Christian Kuntner, Manuel Pasquinelli, and Bernhard Wagner use an interesting strategy in developing their music. Each song is generally moody and slow, and- and this may sound like a negative but is not- there is a kind of sameness to them. However, where this gets very interesting is in how the band members vary the song dynamics. Within their fairly minimal approach lies intriguing variation, mood, dynamics and theme. There is a significant amount of repetition in each song, but this becomes sort of like the minimalism of someone such as Steve Reich, where songs modulate and slowly change without you really noticing. And all of this is fairly harmonically advanced; there is a lot going on under the surface. I am impressed.
While I won't comment on each individual song, since I really view this work as a whole, standouts on the disc include "Twofold Covering" and "Continuum." But having said that, all the rest are good and of a kind. I highly recommend this.
