Remember back in the '80s when extreme metal was in its infancy and cassette tapes of bands from all over the globe flooded the market? That's what I was instantly reminded of when listening to this new 5 song cassette demo from the Finnish trio known as Cemetery Fog, titled Shadows From the Cemetery. From the amateurish cover art all the way down to the raw, dense production, this thing just screams 'homemade' through and through. The music? Well, it's a mix of old school death metal and creepy doom, nothing that's going to set the world on fire, but "Voices From the Dark" and the title track have a certain charm to them which comes through despite the muddy production and less-than stellar musical abilities of the band. There's also a certain mood to these songs which is kind of spooky, and ultimately appealing. As long as you are aware that this is a cassette demo, set your expectations accordingly.
