Engineering the Void is the latest slab of blazing technical death metal from the Swedish band known as Soreption. This is face melting, pulverizing, complex, and just flat out impressive stuff, the album filled with plenty of stop/start arrangements, intricate time changes, brutal drumming, weaving jazz-fusion guitar solos, dizzying riffs, and evil vocals growls. "The Nature of the Blight" just cracks you upside the head with its adventurous passages, and "Breaking the Great Narcissist" features some of the most incredible drum work and crushing riffs I've heard in a while. It's also hard to ignore the massive groove to "Utopia", a slower number with some monstrous riffs and Fredrik Söderberg's vitriol spewing vocals that really pack a side kick to the gut. I don't want to not mention the excellent lead guitar work of Anton Svedin throughout the album, which at times takes a jazz approach and at others straight up metal shred, the latter plainly heard on the ripping "I Am You", another tune with some jaw dropping drum work courtesy of Tony Westermark.
Comparisons are being made to acts like Obscura, Psycroptic, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, The Faceless, Necrophagist, and Decapitated, and to a certain extent that's pretty true, though Soreption seem to have a more precision based sound than some of these other groups. If you love technical death metal though, you've come to the right place, so be sure to check this one out.
