Swedish death metal/thrash veterans The Haunted are one of those bands that have gotten somewhat lost in the shuffle over the last decade. A myriad of personnel changes and some questionable releases have seemed to let them slip from the radar of many extreme metal fans in recent memory, but with a new line-up and a very solid 3-song EP/single here, perhaps their luck is going to change towards the positive going forward. Former singer Marco Aro is now back in the fold, taking over for the once again departing Peter Dolving, while guitarist Anders Björler is off with the reformed At the Gates and drummer Per Möller Jensen has flown the coop as well. Stepping in here are original drummer Adrian Erlandsson and guitarist Ola Englund [Six Feet Under], joining founding guitarist Patrick Jensen and bassist Jonas Björler to solidify the new line-up. To say that the band sounds rejuvenated is an understatement, as "Eye of the Storm" is a kick ass, crunchy slice of thrashy death metal, filled with superb riffs and Arco's 'nails in throat' growling. If you love the dual harmony riffing & soloing of classic The Haunted, At the Gates, or In Flames, there's plenty of that here. "Infiltrator" twists and turns with delicious thrash riffs and galloping rhythms, and the brief "My Enemy" comes in, pummels you over the head in vintage Slayer fashion, then gets out of dodge before the law can show up.
Quick and to the point, Eye of the Storm is a short teaser of what we can hopefully expect on the next full length from The Haunted. It should be something to get excited about based on this.
