Sweden's Morbus Chron have been kicking around since 2007, and after a few releases the band now find themselves on Century Media, with a chance to further spread the word of their old school death metal sound. Comprised of Edvin Aftonfalk (Lead Guitar/ Vocals), Robert Andersson (Guitar/ Lead Vocals), Dag Landin (Bass), and Adam Lindmark (Drums), the band do a great job of of honing in on that creepy, raw, old school death metal style made famous by bands such as Death, Possessed, Obituary, and Autopsy. "Chains" just has this unmistakable vibe that is so 1989, and the lengthy "Towards a Dark Sky" features a wide assortment of complex riffs, weaving arrangements, and agonizing, haunted vocal growls, definitely showing the bands progressive side. Toss in the adventurous instrumental "Aurora in the Offing", the death metal meets NWOBHM "It Stretches in the Hollow", and the epic sounding, almost doom laden "Terminus", and you have a really strong release of classic sounding death metal, but with some additional elements thrown in to make it extra special. The production is quite good and will take you back to that era when extreme metal was still in its infancy, but there's an ominous, chilling vibe throughout the album that is quite compelling. Recommended.
