MaYaN: Antagonise

MaYaN's masterful symphonic death metal is back on Antagonise. I was pumped to see the return of MaYaN with album number two following 2011's Quaterpast which was such an impressive debut. But then it was hardly any surprise given the involvement of songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen (ex. After Forever) who is also the mastermind behind Epica. MaYaN was formed by Mark and keyboardist Jack Driessen (ex. After Forever) as an outlet to record an album in a style that they had always wanted.

With a line-up consisting of eight the one thing that MaYaN isn't short on is band members so along with those above there is drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek (Epica), bass player Rob van der Loo (Epica), guitarist Frank Schiphorst (ex .Symmetry), vocalist Henning Basse (Sons Of Season), vocalist Laura Macrì (LE DIV4S) and guitarist Meral Bechtold (Purest Of Pain).

Antagonise's concept is based around "the current conditions of our society" such as how increasingly our privacy is being taken away from us due to the the rise in power of governments and corporations. Antagonise comes packed with riveting intensity there is a wealth of pummelling technical metal and the alternating between growls and both clean male and some female vocals works a treat. "Desory" is included as a bonus track on the version I received and serves as an entrancing orchestral instrumental introduction, while the heady metal of "Bloodline Forfeit" sure gets the blood pumping as the furore of MaYaN is unleashed Arien van Weesenbeek is so devastating with his drumming. "Burn Your Witches" follows and MaYaN are also on fire blazing a path with their glorious death metal and "Paladins of Deceit - National Security Extremism part 1" just screams for more volume. " Devil in Disguise" is another enthralling song the music is just awesome and there is so much more of that to be heard on Antagonise.

If you thought their debut was impressive just wait till you get hold of the follow up Antagonise MaYaN are surely one of metal's brightest acts.
