Released in 1969, The Who's legendary concept double album Tommy has long been heralded as one of the most important albums in the history of rock. At the time, the band was at a status quo, with a slew of hit singles under their belt but no true album success. Tommy changed all that, Pete Townshend's story of the deaf, dumb, and blind boy resonated with audiences world wide, and took on an even larger than life presence on stage, with Roger Daltrey fully becoming the title character. Sensation-The Story of the Who's Tommy is a brand new Blu-ray/DVD documentary that takes an in-depth look at this seminal concept album, complete with new interview segments with Townshend, Daltrey, associates & friends of the band, plus archival interviews with the group. Specific songs are looked at and talked about ("Pinball Wizard", "Acid Queen", "See Me Feel Me" and others) and there are a host of vintage performance clips sprinkled throughout the film.
Originally aired on BBC TV in August 2013, Sensation-The Story of The Who's Tommy includes additional material not featured in the TV broadcast, as well as a bonus 33-minute feature from the 1969 German TV show Beat Club. This black & white feature, which includes previously unreleased footage, includes tracks from the album and interviews with band members. Though most of the performances look lip synced, it's still pretty cool to see this vintage footage. The video presentation throughout this Blu-ray is spectacular, as is the audio. If you are a fan of The Who & Tommy this will be a must see.
