Il Rumore Bianco: Mediocrazia
There have been some impressive Italian releases in 2013 and one band to keep an eye out for is Il Rumore Bianco and their debut EP Mediocrazia. Thomas Pessini (keyboards, synths, backing vocals), Michele Zanotti (electric and acoustic guitars, saxophone) and Alessandro Danzi (bass) formed the band in 2012 before adding members Frederico Lonardi (electric and acoustic guitars), Eddy Fiorio (lead vocals) and Umberto Sartori (drums).
Although short, just under thirty minutes, the band packs a lot of music into these four tracks. This is progressive rock with good complexity fusing on other styles like jazz and ambient. Guitars and keyboards are both used effectively. Lots of edgy guitar riffs and a myriad of keyboard sounds creating sonic soundscapes that are at times quite ethereal and dreamy, with a definite quirkiness. King Crimson did come to mind and seems to be a big influence and while there is a retro flavour here there are modern elements as well all helping to elevate the sound.
The first track "Tutto un Sogno (parte 1)" builds in intensity with wonderful Hammond work taking center stage; a definite nod to classic '70s prog. The guitar riffs are edgy and the singer has a good voice and is able to 'soar' when he wants to. The tempo slows and builds back up again and the metallic guitar riffs have a modern edge. "Il Vestito Buono" has a dreamy ambient intro before cutting edge guitar chords cut through the pastoral keyboard soundscape. The vocals are excellent, especially the background 'ahs' which ooze melody. "Il Primo Attore" is another good track, I especially like the saxophone, while the last song "Tutto un Sogno (parte 2)" is very pleasant and relaxing with nice keyboard textures and sultry sax lines. Again the music builds before dramatic guitar riffs are unleashed creating a much heavier sound. Throw in swells of synths and delicate guitar phrasings and you have nine minutes of pure prog rock bliss.
Mediocrazia is an impressive debut and I highly recommend it to fans of Italian prog and prog rock in general.
