Szabo, Daniel/Peter Erskine/Edwin Livingston: A Song From There
A Song From There is the third album from Hungarian born pianist/composer Daniel Szabo who now resides on the west coast of the U.S. Joining Szabo are Peter Erskine (drums) and Edwin Livingston (bass).
All three musicians are excellent and play exceptionally well together. The album, in part, is influenced by classical composer Bela Bartok and some of Szabo's playing does contain a classical feel.
All the tracks are solid so it is hard picking favourites. The album opening "Hun-Fro Blues" has a pretty nice piano melody and sounds very crisp and clear. Erskine's brush work is quite nice and his drumming becomes more complex as the song plays out. In "Kids' Dance" subtle cymbal taps and riveting piano, both solo and rhythms, highlight the piece. The piano eventually fades slightly and the bass becomes more prominent. "Eastynato" is another very good track with great dynamics and a nice balance between melody and complexity. The piano is both delicate and forceful and as it fades to lighter shades Livingston delivers an outstanding bass solo. And so it goes throughout the disc.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of quality jazz releases that make it to my CD player and A Song From There is no exception. There are no weak links in this band as all three musicians play with imagination and gusto. Recommended.
