Mire: Inward/Outward
Warning: serious Tool-isms happening here....
There, now that I got that out of the way, let me introduce you to Mire, a Canadian progressive metal band consisting of Dave Massicotte (Guitar & Vocals) Stephane Boileau (Drums), J.P. Lachapelle (Lead Vocals), Bruno Chouinard (Guitar & Keys), and Robbie O'Brien (Bass). Formed in 2010, Mire play a dark form of prog-metal that sounds as close to classic Tool as Tool themselves. From the crunchy, bombastic guitar riffs, to the chilling keyboards, the frantic, complex rhythms, and the uncanny Maynard James Keenan styled vocals of Lachapelle, Inward/Outward could easily have been labeled as the upcoming Tool record and I'll bet most folks wouldn't have caught on. But, it isn't, and let's be honest, despite the similarities, Mire are a seriously exciting band with a lot to offer. This is impressive, dramatic, powerful material here, tunes like "Tyrannicide", "Complex", the haunting two-part "Limitless", and the beefy, bottom heavy rumbler "Beast and the Machine" just crackle with energy and a mysterious edge that is ever so compelling. The guitar riffs are huge, the rhythms are intricate, the vocals alluring...all things that make up a great progressive metal album. At the other end of the spectrum is the hypnotic "Catalan Atlas", complete with some irresistible guitar textures and nimble rhythms, or the Tool by way of Rush & King Crimson technicality that is "Open Circle". Just brilliant stuff.
While the world waits for the forthcoming Tool album (and we've been waiting a LONG time), everyone should do themselves a favor and grab a copy of Inward/Outward. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Mire: Inward/Outward Posted by Steven Reid, SoT Staff Writer on 2014-03-22 12:29:13 My Score:
Canadian Progressive Mathmen, Mire, are seriously TOOLed up and by that I don't only mean that they have all the weapons (staccato riffs, swooping, scything vocals, complex drum patterns, dense atmosphere) they need to get their job done. Put simply, they sound like Tool. Primarily Mire sound like old Tool, like Tool did before vocals began to take a more backseat role in their sound. Other influences also come to the fore, with A Perfect Circle popping up and the odd more straight forward chugachug riff relaxing some of the more mind bending aspects of their sound for at least a second or two.
So it's pretty simple really, for the thoroughly angry "Tyrannicide", the more angular but not necessarily any less angst ridden "Complex" or the oozingly ponderous "Open Circle" to hit home in your world, a liking for all things Maynard fronted is a must. Although the same also goes for "Limitless Pt.1" and, of course "Limitless Pt.2", as well as "Beast And The Machine". However that's not to suggest that Inward/Outward isn't a cracking good listen – it is and the decided similarity to Tool is actually a good thing when you consider how long it is since we've had any new output from that particular band. The musical and compositional prowess of Mire also has to be admired, for they don't sound second best here at all.
Mire are a talented young bunch who know exactly what they're trying to achieve with their sound and it is has to be said that they do it very well indeed.
Now, if only I could work out who they remind me of...........
