Rueslatten, Kari: Time to Tell
Kari Rueslatten was a founding member of the Norwegian band called The 3rd and the Mortal, an experimental and progressive musical group that played something like melodic doom metal on their earliest releases. I'm mostly unfamiliar with their music, though I have listened to their 1994 EP entitled Sorrow. On that release, the music is atmospheric, minimal, and slightly doomy. Rueslatten's voice, clear and beautiful, rises above the music, a bright point in the gloom. In addition to their shorter releases, the band also put out four full-length albums. For better or worse, the band broke up a couple of years ago.
With this release, Ruelsatten's first solo release in eight years, she offers listeners a strong collection of mellow, pretty, and somewhat folksy, songs. According the Ruelsatten, the music on this album was composed entirely with her singing at a piano. Though the instrumentation includes guitars, upright bass, drums, piano, and pump organ, each song retains the straightforward quality of a singer-songwriter alone at her piano. For fans that prefer metal releases, this album will not be to their tastes. For others with more eclectic ears, this sweet and melancholy album may be just the thing. The highlight, of course, is Rueslatten's beautiful voice. I don't often listen to albums like this one, but I would certainly reach for it when I'm in a quieter mood, my mind needing a break from the rough and aggressive sounds that fill most of my days.
