The Oath is Swedish guitarist Linnea Olsson & German vocalist Johanna Sadonis, and this is their self-titled debut album for Rise Above Records. That's right, two hot chicks playing metal, and pretty damn good I might add. Just imagine classic Mercyful Fate with female vocals, and that's kind of what these two have put together here. With help on the album from bassist Simon Bouteloup (Kadavar) and drummer Andrew Prestidge (Angel Witch), The Oath is a fun, powerful display of dark, classic old school metal. It's not hard to fall for those sizzling, vintage styled riffs on cuts like "Silk Road", "All Must Die", "Night Child", and the galloping NWOBHM stomp of "Black Rainbow". For her part, Sadonis delivers some powerful vocals, even going the lush, enchanting route on the moody "Leaving Together". Fans of The Devil's Blood will love the 7-minute closer, which combines spooky folk themes with crushing riffs that recall Danzig, Black Sabbath, and Trouble.
Yeah, as you can tell, this is a very solid debut, and I'm looking forward to not only playing this one a hell of a lot more, but also seeing what they come up with next.
