The Strigas are certainly a new name to me so a little history lesson is very much in order courtesy of their record company Southern Brigade. "Formed in the summer of 2010 in Southern Italy, The Strigas debuted with a self-produced EP containing the songs 'Sometimes' and 'Falling Down'In 2011 they signed to Southern Brigade In 2013 some of their songs were chosen to be included in the official soundtrack of the movie 'The Crow: Shreds Of Memories', directed by P.Cinieri." A Poisoned Kiss To Reality was recorded, mixed and mastered at Golem Dungeon Studios by Giuseppe Dentamaro (Golem, Backjumper, Godyva) and features a special guest appearance by Godyva keyboardist Botys on the song 'Falling Down.
After all that exposition, what's the record like? It certainly shows promise with some faux Goth inflections and with songs such as "Sweet Bitterness" and "Falling Down" (sample lyrical snippet, "I'll be lost forever….") displaying an appreciation of what the metal kids may well be down with. However, as is often the case these days there is precious little new here. There is nothing at all wrong with the constituent parts (I particularly enjoy the double whammy of "The Box" followed by "Wrong") but as a whole there is just something just not pushing it into the "top notch" category. Perhaps the second album may be the one.
