Crommie, Daniel: Precious Time (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Oregon native Daniel Crommie is a multi-instrumentalist who dabbles in a myriad of instruments including dulcimer, synthesizer, recorder, flute, mandolin, balalaika, and psaltery. Not your typical run of the mill instrument list that's for sure. He has released albums with Group Du Jour, Echo System and Saturnalia Trio as well as having an extensive solo discography.
Precious Time was originally released on cassette in 1989. There are a total of nineteen tracks including two bonus tunes but my player only shows a listing of four. Hence this review will not compare individual tracks which is okay as much of the music is connected from one theme to the next. I hesitate to call this album new age even though Crommie's music is quite ethereal, atmospheric and relaxing. Folk, space, electronic and medieval music are just some of the paths taken here, all enveloped with Crommie's distinct flute playing and atmospheric synth washes. At times the music forms denser soundscapes and it is here the intensity level rises just a bit. Fans of Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno will appreciate some of the more electronic arrangements.
You will not find many intense instrumental workouts here, that's not what Precious Time is about. If, however, you enjoy instrumental music where the pieces flow seamlessly together and the ambience never gets too heavy, Precious Time might warrant further investigation.
