Pendejo: Atacames

With a name like Pendejo, it's actually surprising to find out that this band hails from the Netherlands, but further investigation finds that cousins El Pastuso (vocals, trumpet) & Jaap 'Monchito' Melman (guitar) actually have latino roots, and along with bassist Stef 'El Rojo' Gubbels and drummer Jos 'Pepellin' Roosen, they've put together a bizarre heavy rock album filled with monstrous grooves, lots of riffs, and a wealth of Spanish flavors. And, yes, the lyrics are all sung in Spanish for those of you asking. Though there's bound to be somewhat of a language barrier for many, it's hard not to like the enthusiasm and energy here on Atacames, as tunes like ""Amor Y Pereza", "Unero", and "Camaron" bump and grind with plenty of stoner riffs & grooves. I can also appreciate the bits of psychedelia, as well as Latin jazz (thanks to that trumpet) on "Cuarenta y Siete". Overall I'm not loving the vocals of El Pastuso, who has a gruff style to begin with and he's seeming to really lay on the accent perhaps a tad too thick, and some of this stuff is just so all over the place that it can be hard to get into. Still, with a handful of heavy tunes that scratch that stoner itch, and some cool trumpet blasts thrown in between those riffs, this one is worth a listen.
