As stark and foreboding as a November evening in Transylvania, Richard Wileman's Karda Estra presents Voivode Dracula ; music inspired by the classic Bram Stoker novel : Dracula . This 8th release by Mr Wileman has him playing classical, electric, and bass guitars, keyboards, percussion, bouzouki, rastrophone, and various other colours. Joining him are Ileesha Bailey ( vocals), Helen Dearnley (violin), Carol Hansford ( oboe, cor anglais, and vocals), Sarah Higgins ( cello), Zoe King ( flute, alto saxophone, clarinet, and vocals) and Michelle Williams ( clarinet).
Voivode Dracula is a beautifully orchestrated movement which contrasts very delicate , soft passages ,with grandiose and harsh punctuations. The result is an exquisite musical tapestry. The pacing of the music is deliberately slow, creating an ominous reticence throughout. Lucy- Festina Lente features haunting ,ethereal vocals which create an otherwordly effect which works beautifully.
Not a disc I'd recommend you play at your next Sunday BBQ, Voivode Dracula is best appreciated in dark, introspective moments. Let Karda Estra be your guide into the nether regions of your soul; just make sure you know the way back.
