Here's another band set to enter the technical death metal championships, the Boston act known as Pillory. Not sure I like the name, but the bands sophomore release on Unique Leader, Evolutionary Miscarriage, is a damn impressive miasma of nimble drum blasts, crushing riffs, spastic prog/fusion lead guitar work, and evil growls, bellows, and screams. Just what the doctor ordered right? Well, for tech-death fans, it's certainly the recipe for success, and Pillory have delivered a tasty treat here for sure.
You have to love the weaving, undulating riffs and drum patters of the title track, and tunes like "Mass Enmity", "Purify the Commonwealth", and "Imbeciles in Defiance" are just so damn brutal that it's hard not to stand up and take notice. For most fans of this type of music though, it's going to be the complex, intricate stuff that goes on during parts of "Nihilarian", "And The Defeated Emerge", and "Lixiviated" that really is going to get the blood pumping, all those little 'noodly-widdly' bits that all the non-prog lovers hate, but all true fans just can't get enough of. Pillory throw plenty of these technical elements into each song, yet most of the time it all makes sense and carries a sense of melody with it, just not complexity for the sake of being complex. While it can be said that Pillory aren't really doing anything that Spawn of Possession, Obscura, Necrophagist, Decrepit Birth, Dying Fetus, and the like haven't already done, this is still a very solid and enjoyable slice of tech-death that any fan will get a lot of mileage out of.
