Andy Paul, lead singer for U.K. hard rockers Scream Arena, says his band is "so tired of Smiths retreads and rewatered workings of The Clash being sold to us as the future of rock music." Well, so are we.
While Scream Arena's feral brand of good-time rock with a metallic edge may not necessarily be the future of rock music, it sure makes for a hell of a fun listening experience.
Take the band's barely recognizable version of Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" — the idea of Paul Sabu, who produced this self-titled debut and has worked with such big hitters as KISS and Madonna. Heavy and nasty, the song is reimagined by Scream Arena as a cut Presley might have made today if his music were informed by the likes of Ratt, Alice Cooper, Accept and Def Leppard.
Other tracks find Scream Arena playing chugging riffs that never seem to go out of style paired with lyrics about chasing dreams (the relentless "Forever"), fame ("Racing to the End of Night") and lust ("The Price of Love"). For good-time rock 'n' roll without a weird aftertaste, give Scream Arena a spin. And if you happen to see these guys opening for W.A.S.P., Lillian Axe or even Aerosmith, don't be too surprised.
