Insense: De: Evolution

You have to love when record labels or PR firms boldly state something like "For Fans Of Meshuggah, Textures and Extol!" and then we you actually listen to the CD it sounds nothing like that proclamation. De: Evolution is the latest from Norwegian act Insense, who have been around since 1999 and have a handful of albums already under their belt. These guys sound surprisingly like a US metalcore band with some slight prog & djent leanings, the songs fairly melodic with a mix of clean vocals & growls/screams. Though billed as 'technical metal', many of the songs are fairly straightforward, though there is some intricate drumming on tracks such as "What Life" and "Sick is the Will". Though you can kind of hear the appeal of this sort of thing, there's nothing really going on during De: Evolution that sets Insense apart from the myriad of bands out there who play a similar style. The vocals are not especially inspiring, and the music on the whole is not nearly as adventurous as it's billed as. Strictly middle of the road, nothing more, nothing less.
