Qoph: Glancing Madly Backwards

Now with a few albums under their belt, Swedish psychedelic/stoner act Qoph and their label, Transubstans Records, are releasing Glancing Madly Backwards (nice little nod to Captain Beyond there), a collection of obscure & alternate recordings from 1998-2013. From the gritty hard rock of "Resh", to the experimental prog of "Metamorphosis", all the way to the mix of psychedelia & jam on "Anticipations", it's clear right off the bat that Qoph continue to be a band that borders on the brink of many different styles. Folky hard rock is all the rage on "Will the Sun Be Back Tomorrow", and the album centerpiece, the near 19-minute epic "Kalejdoskopiska Aktiviteter" dives right into '70s prog with a healthy dose of blues, jazz-fusion, and psychedelia, almost like a midnight jam between The Allman Brothers Band, Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead, and Eloy. Stoner rock fans will love the beefy, proto-metal sounds of "Rastlös" and "Ögonblick", while "Dansar Galet Bakåt" has a late '60s Deep Purple feel to it. Another lengthy track, "Förförande Rädsla" features horns and crunchy riffs, which complement the powerful vocals, as the band seem to be paying homage to acts like Chicago or Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

Glancing Madly Backwards is a fun follow-up to their solid Freaks album from 2012, a collection of recordings from the vault that should tide over Qoph's fans till their next studio effort.
