Cafebar 401: Cafebar 401
Reminiscent of the Tragically Hip and other hipster bands (plus Grace-era Jeff Buckley), Cafebar 401 is on the ball musically, creating driving, pulsating rhythms that last in short bursts of three and four minutes at a time. Tracks such as "Senses Working Overtime" and "Bob Ross On Drugs" have plenty of sonic action, transforming the listener from mere listener to beat slave. The problem, though, is that the songs often aren't dynamic enough. The band locks into a comfortable groove, hangs there for a long time (especially on "Full-Pro Disco!" and "Many Left Here Long Before"), reluctant to let go. Even songs that do break from the head groove sometimes feel a little too familiar, a little too same-y to really recommend this as the "it" album of the moment. There's promise here, for sure, it just hasn't been fully realized yet.
