With four full-length releases now under their belt, Kentucky's Black Stone Cherry seem poised to finally hit the big time. Their brand of hard rock, heavy metal, and Southern rock is packed with irresistible hooks and enormous riffs, the kind of music that is destined for arenas around the world. Backed by Roadrunner Records and already with experience out on the road in support of acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Chickenfoot, and Alter Bridge, the time seems right for Black Stone Cherry to cross over to that next level. Magic Mountain certainly has all the elements to help make that happen; most importantly, it's always about the songs, and with catchy hard rock fare like "Peace Pipe", "Holding On to Letting Go", "Bad Luck & Hard Love", and the addicting "Me and Mary Jane", it's not hard to imagine this album catching on in a big way. Throw in the rootsy, almost country/Southern rock ballads like "Runaway" and "Sometimes", plus the Skynyrd inspired "Never Surrender", and you have an exciting blend of styles and songs that constantly inspire your senses. Ultimately though, hard rock fans crave heavy riffs, and the band have come up with a boatload of them here, like the nasty snarl of "Fiesta del Fuego" and the psych/blues-metal chords of "Remember Me", just to name a few more guitar fueled gems. Chris Robertson's vocals are strong & powerful throughout, and he's quickly becoming one of the must-hear singers in rock, as well as a formidable guitar slinger.
If you've loved the bands previous three releases, no doubt you'll be all over this latest. This is top notch, heavy, modern day Southern rock, catchy as all hell with some really sizzling guitar playing...oh yeah, and a few tunes about pot, just in case you are interested in that sort of thing too.
