Copernicus: Immediate Eternity II

Copernicus is an American artist specializing in spoken word recordings. I suppose you could view him as more of a modern day beat poet. His first album Nothing Exists was released in 1984 and in the intervening years has put out a total of thirteen albums, his latest being Immediate Eternity II, which is actually a re-recording of his 2001 album Immediate Eternity. I believe the original album was released in three languages; English, French and Spanish.

For this new version, the lyrics and musicians are the same as they were in 2001. They include Cesar Aragundi (guitar), Newton Velasquez (keyboards), Juan Carlos Zuniga Lopez (bass), Marvin Wright (drums) and Matty Fillou (saxophone on track 6).

Not sure where to begin with this release. As with the few Copernicus CDs I have heard the musicianship is quite good. Jazz, fusion, progressive rock, avant-garde; it is all here. The only problem are the vocals. I just cannot get into the spoken word thing. The first two tracks are a case in point. Jazzy progressive rock is what you'll find with some wicked guitar soloing on both tracks. Too bad the over-the-top vocals ruin it for me and it is pretty much the same for the entire disc.

I really tried to like this and as I stated earlier the music is pretty good. If this was an instrumental album it would have gone down much smoother. Unfortunately that is not the case and 2.5 stars it is.
