Hatetyler: Vidia

Italy's Hatetyler have released a fresh extreme metal CD entitled Vidia. The title cut shows a djenty style with shouted hardcore vocals from Stefano Oliva (think early In Flames). Not much separation between the two guitars exist on this track but the drum sounds are up front and well separated. There are some electronic flourishes underneath which reinforce the well-done production as a whole.

Track two "Avoid Your Sin" mixes clean and dirty vocals and it turns out that Stefano has a pristine baritone clean voice! One spin of this track paying attention to the chorus and I'm sure you'd agree this is "single" material. Guitar harmonies between Marco Pastrino and Federico Maraucci give the track a classic metal touch yet there is enough chugging to keep this sounding current.

Another track with a single-worthy package is "Photograph." I know in the USA the growls and screams don't usually get played on terrestrial radio but if it did, this would be frequently played. The chorus hook is obviously catchy. There is great rhythmic juggling between choruses which may be a tad complicated for the masses. The B section is also melodic and very well written. This is obviously written by European metal musicians if you catch my drift; attention is paid to the melodies and chord progressions as opposed to so many cookie-cutter American metal acts.

"Listen To My Tragedy" starts speedy and is reminiscent of the Gothenburg metal of the 90s. The chorus is half-time with fantastic vocal harmonies. The harmonized guitar solo is thrash harmony reincarnated. In retrospect, track one is not indicative of the last 3 songs. Bassist Luca Negro has a bass solo at the end of the song; it's good to hear the bass which usually is hard to detect.

"Awaken The End" has a symphonic death metal sound with addition of synths. The vocals are harsh and quite impressive.

More dual-guitar harmonies and speedy, heavy metal arrives with "Lifenymph." Impressive guitar solos bring us to the ¾ point and we are dropped into clean guitars and vocal harmonies. The dynamics are well-placed.

"Swallows and Crows" continues the formula of heavy, rhythmic metal and harmonious choruses. You know what they say when it's not broken?

Bust out the lighter for "Make Me Stronger" and have your lady listen to this track, if you know what I'm saying. A pleasant metal ballad surrounded by the brutality.

Final track "D.D." is different – there is an electronic opening, harmonized vocals, funk rock, legato guitar/bass lines, guitar chording as opposed to the palm-muted chugging, etc… This shows what the band is capable of doing - they can emulate Extreme, Faith No More, Cradle of Filth, and Soilwork.

Do I have to categorize this by genre? I'd rather say if you dig the Gothenburg sound, modern production, and influences from all realms of extreme metal, this would be worth your time. Vidia has plenty to offer fans of today's metal genres and I am quite impressed.
