Shaved Women: Just Death

I don't hear any plans to change the world here, no ambition to take the music world by storm. Instead, I hear a bunch of guys dragging out their gear and delivering a decent half-hour of distorted, punk-infused, music.

Just check out the first few tracks if you don't believe me. The music here is stripped-down punk rock mixed with a little bit of crust. The guitar sound—a consistently deep fuzz—was especially good. I also thought the drums were pretty great.

If this album has one drawback it's that the music occasionally plods. I'm thinking specifically of the last track "World of Change." Not only the longest track, it's also the one that feels the most stuck in its 4/4 rhythm. Punk can be very precise, but it does better with a slightly faster tempo and a slightly concealed sense of time.

The shorter tracks—and there are plenty of them—have a much more driving quality, one that doesn't get stuck along the way. Check out "Bottom Feeder," "Paranoia," and "Tired Again" for examples of how well these guys work with a shorter form.
