Marty Friedman is undoubtably one of the world's premier guitarists whether it be as a solo artist, his work with Jason Becker or the time spent in Megadeth his influence and contributions can't be denied. To what is quite a crushing new solo album Inferno, Inferno has a collaboration with Jason Becker on "Horrors" their first since the band Cacophony. Despite having to deal with the debilitating Lou Gehrig's Disease that hasn't stopped Jason Becker from creating music, and "Horrors" is a fine reminder of their speed metal symphony days. Some of those other contributors on Inferno are guitarists/vocalists Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) and David Davidson (Revocation) along with the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Inferno is mostly instrumentals with vocals on three songs which adds to the variety, though you could also count "Meat Hook" with its chants this is once crazy yet irresistible pumping metal track with that shredding saxophone of Jorgen Munkeby. Opening track "Inferno" sets the tone for this scorching musical ride with the shred master, "Resin" builds into another incorporating speed and ferocity. Teaming up with the acoustic duo of Rodrigo y Gabriela was a masterstroke for "Wicked Panacea" which brings some extra and very tasty flavour to the album.
With Inferno Marty Friedman has created one heavy gem of a release, and his exotic and intense playing is still as enthralling as ever. Inferno is easily my pick of his solo work since one of my all time favourite instrumental albums Dragon's Kiss, actually this album will sit very well with fans of Marty's exciting earlier work.
