For A Dozen Matters: The Hell That Follows
Another day, another sub-genre, as a band of Greek Metal marauders come described as being from the New Wave Of Swedish Death Metal.... Anyway, putting tags and geography aside, what the rather indecipherably named, For A Dozen Matters (lost in translation possibly?), hammer out on their debut release, The Hell That Follows, is as suspected, inspired by the likes of Entombed, Black Breath or The Haunted. Yes a shabby production hampers things a fair bit, riffs lost in the wilderness, drums like pummelled cardboard boxes on a wet and windy night, vocals often too remote from their surrounds. Yet there's a charm and honesty about "Deathrider Approaches", "Behold, A Burning Wall", and "...And Hell Followed" that makes it impossible not to enjoy them. Admittedly in a fashion of, well there's nothing new here to get the juices flowing, or well, this riff goes here, yes, there's the ever so expected drum fill and time change, over there. And yet (again) the vocals still somehow gargle and growl in a convincing manner, the guitars still spit forth with fury and the drums gallop and crawl in equal measure and intensity, no matter their tempo.
For A Dozen Matters are Metal as a Metal thing, incorporating a little NWOBHM into their NWOSDM; both genres which should always be filled with an unexpected stab of danger. Unfortunately that is something which remains stubbornly elusive here. However there's still enough on show to suggest that future efforts of more depth and originality may not be a million miles away. As it is however, The Hell That Follows is a solid effort from the band that follows, although they do it well.
