Neil Innes' career in pop music began decades ago when he helped form the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. They had a pretty big hit in 1968 with the McCartney produced "I'm the Urban Spaceman". After the band broke up he joined the Monty Python troop in 1976 and also developed the Rutland Weekend Television series for the BBC along with Eric Idle. The show featured Idle's sketches and Innes' music along with his backing band labeled Fatso. One of the sketches from the show developed into the world famous band The Rutles, a parody of the Beatles.
In 2008 Innes got back together with Fatso and hit the road culminating in the Farewell Posterity Tour CD. It is a two disc set filled with '60s inspired British pop music with the occasional nod to the Beatles all wrapped in Innes' playful sense of humour and panache.
This is purely a pleasant pop album from the short '50s pop pastiche "Elvis And The Disagreeable Backing Singers" to "Ouch", a parody of the Beatles "Help". The country ballad "Dreams Shine Through" is quite nice as is the rockabilly/country ditty "Crystal Balls". "Fortune Teller" has a mellow Dire Straits feel with Knopfler-like vocals and the feel good country pop of "Urban Spaceman" is quite charming. The band also do a few covers like Poco's country rocking "Better Think Twice" and George Harrison's wistful "Beware Of Darkness". In many songs the music stops to make way for Innes' British humour and then continues on like in the catchy "Ego Warriors".
This isn't music I would normally listen to but I found these CDs to be quite appealing and the songs are certainly infectious enough. While Innes' sense of humour is on full display he has also written some pretty good pop songs. Just remember, Innes doesn't take his music too seriously and neither should you.
