Cursed to See the Future is the Relapse Records debut from Brooklyn, New York extreme metal horde Mortals. I used the term extreme metal here because this band doesn't neatly fit into any of the various sub-categories. There's plenty of death metal, bits of black metal, a healthy dose of thrash, as well as some doom/stoner/sludge as well. Despite the wealth of styles and varying elements going on here, Mortals have created a pretty enjoyable album that's more than heavy enough and features some mighty fine riffing on tracks "View From a Tower", the doom laden "Epochryphal Gloom", and the raging inferno that is "Devilspell". Oh, and did I mention that this band are all women? Caryn (drums), Elizabeth (guitar), and Lesley (bass) crank out the furious metal as good as any male dominated bands out there, and display a knack for putting together memorable, lengthy songs that featuring dazzling interplay, lots of drama & dynamic, and with some fierce, effective vocal growls that are just icing on the cake. A very fine release indeed.
