"Heavy, catchy and technical" are words appropriately used to describe the sound of Atlanta, Georgia based modern metal band Halcyon Way. And that technical side is not over the top and helps to separate this band's sound from similar groups. Their Influences are many including progressive and thrash metal bands, Halcyons Way's songs are potent and very accessible thanks to their catchy style. Founded in 2001 and with three previous albums Halcyon Way have steadily continued to grow in popularity and with exposure from wide spread touring, plus other avenues like through the inclusion of their songs in the popular video game Rock Band. The release of Conquer their potent fourth album should go a long way to keep that momentum going forward.
Steve Braun has a strong clean and likeable vocal style and some darker backing vocals are used in parts of the album. Drummer Ernie Topran is given the freedom to let loose on opening and title track "Conquer" making his way around his kit before his band mates come in to play. Halcyon Way follow with the heavy and melodic "Web Of Lies" an album standout, one where the chorus and guitars are so compelling, and Conquer has plenty of guitar driven hooks via those powerful riffs. "Conceived In Torment" has added intensity exploding at the start with Halcyon's metal wrath, the death vocals work very well on this track. "World Comes Undone" gets underway with a express thrash metal feel that appears later on, as this song then settles into it's groove.
I have read considerable positive praise regarding Halcyon Way and after spending time with Conquer they were justified.
