Nux Vomica: Nux Vomica
This is a solid album by a terrific band. The best thing about Nux Vomica is the overall mellow atmosphere of the music. Don't get me wrong, these guys can be as hardcore as anyone, but they can also establish some of the most pensive and calm moments I've heard lately. I actually got to the point, as I listened to this album over and over, that I preferred the mellower portions over everything else. I think the reason for that is due to the fact that these passages gave the band a more distinctive sound than anything else. I also think that the slower, calmer, passages, highlighted the structure of each track pretty well. Each track—and all of them are pretty long—has different segments, punctuated by various moods and purposes. To me, the band put together some strong music, the kind that weaves in and out of each mood, one never dominating the other. I like that kind of variety. If this were nothing more than 45 minutes of sludgy hardcore it would risk growing tiresome.
My favorite track was "Reeling," but I also really liked "Choked at the Roots." "Sanity for the Passive" was my least favorite track but I love its title. I think these guys are right—sanity is overrated.
Track Listing:
1. Sanity is for the Passive
2. Reeling
3. Chocked at the Roots
