With an album title like Happiness Is Fiction, and song titles like "Failure", "Sinking", "Sckness" (that is the correct spelling) and "These Demons", you'd hardly be expecting fun, uplifting sunny-side-of-the-street stuff.
My Fate's debut album is a Machine Head-lite doom and gloom death-meets-nu-metal effort that achives a solid C+ for effort. Happiness Is Fiction revolves around double-bass, dual-guitar, bass-heavy sludge riffs which distort with the resonance of a chainsaw cutting through a sheet of tinplate.
The death vocals aren't that deathlike, and are more of an angry growl – sort of Rammstein meets Emperor. The album's strongest points are when the vocals switch into clean-mode and are deep and moody, in the low registers, not exactly melodic, echoing – in some measure – the voice in genre-leaders like Tiamat and Moonspell. There are brief passages of originality here, the riffs are up to standard, the execution is very good, and there are spells of real guitar playing.
The Finnish fivepiece has been around for over four years and has plenty of experience as well as two EPs under its collective belt. This, an average age of 21, and the very good execution speak to the promise of better things to come – but My Fate they will first need to shake off the influences of its forebears and apply some originality.
