Mat McNerney & Kimmo Helén: The World Is Burning

This is the latest eclectic release from Svart Records and is a soundtrack to a short movie by Mat McNerney (Hexvessel/Beastmilk) and Kimmo Helén (Hexvessel), inspired by Newfoundland Folk and the Canadian wilderness. McNerney says of the process, ""We researched a lot into Newfoundland and traditional folk music of the past and today, spending a few months looking into and listening to libraries of collected works. I was surprised at how much it reminded me of the Celtic music of my Irish upbringing and ancestry and felt immediate connection to it and an instant ability to relate to the stories." A short film has obviously inspired a fairly short album, clocking in at around the thirty-six minute mark, the opening tracks being only about forty-five seconds long, both echoing Paul Giovanni's opening sequence for The Wicker Man in their Celtic instrumentation. "To the Land Within" also feels like it belongs somewhere in a deserted landscape and conjures (for me) visions of bleakness and hardship – which doesn't necessarily sell this album as a bag of fun but it is one of those album which creates (dreaded word ahoy) soundscapes in the listener's mind but requires careful attention to fully appreciate.
