Mike Kershaw is one of those DIY guys who consistently improves with each new album. Ice Age, the third full-length release from the UK-based singer and musician whose distinct brand of atmospheric prog nestles nicely between the Alan Parsons Project and post-Gabriel Genesis, is Kershaw's most complete and professional recording. The nine songs here float on airy, keyboard-dominated melodies and are performed with a passion and joy listeners can sense. While some might find Kershaw's voice (which falls somewhere between a deeper-sounding Ian Anderson, Phil Collins and Ray Wilson) rather monotonous, I consider it both refreshing and reassuring — and one of the primary reasons these tunes are so memorable.
Ice Age makes for ideal wake-me-up music in the morning and works even better as a let-me-chill soundtrack at night. I listen to this one a lot.
