British progressive rock band Greenslade formed in 1972 and released their self-titled debut the following year. After three more albums the band disbanded in 1975 as they had more managerial problems than they could handle. Fast forward to the year 2000 and the release of Large Afternoon, recently rereleased on the Angel Air label with extended liner notes.
On the album original members Dave Greenslade (keyboards) and Tony Reeves (bass guitar) teamed with up with newer members John Young (vocals, keyboards) and Chris Cozens (drums).
I have to say I am new to Greenslade having missed them in the '70s. You may have noticed there are no guitars to be found so you can well imagine this is a pretty mellow album and with two keyboard players the music has a heavy keyboard presence. Lots of orchestral swells and synth textures. Five of the nine tracks are instrumental.
The first track "Cakewalk" is pure symphonic progressive rock with a driving riff and big orchestral elements. "Hallelujah Anyway" veers into gospel/pop territory with uplifting lyrics and strong lead vocals from Young. Not really prog but nice nonetheless. "In The Night" is another mellow vocal tune with pretty acoustic guitar and soothing lead vocals. Maybe a hint of the Moody Blues here. Again, this is pretty radio friendly stuff as the band play it quite safe. Of the vocal tunes my favourite is "On Suite" which is more adventurous with some interesting rhythmic patterns and drenched in an abundance of keys. Tony Reeves bass work is also impressive.
To like this album one needs to appreciate the mellower side of prog, with a large dosage of pop rock as well. The music never gets too complicated and for me that is okay. Sometimes I just want to relax when I listen to music and Large Afternoon fits that bill rather nicely and the melodies are outstanding. Looking forward to checking out their '70s albums.
