Larry Goldings/Peter Bernstein/Bill Stewart: Ramshackle Serenade

Larry Goldings (Hammond organ), Peter Bernstein (guitar) and Bill Stewart (drums), otherwise known as the Larry Goldings' Trio have been playing together for over twenty years and it shows on their latest album Ramshackle Serenade. The trio tackles contemporary jazz with great aplomb giving each instrument equal share in the spotlight. The playing is seemingly effortless, as the musicians play off one another as only the best jazz musicians can.

In "Roach" the drums provide a slinky groove for Goldings' big organ chords and Bernstein's crystal clear guitar work. "Luiza", originally written by Antônio Jobim, is an adventurous track with subtle drumming and sizzling organ. The melodic "Simple As That" is another strong track with Bernstein's guitar slicing through the percolating organ runs and restrained drum work. The musicians trade solos seamlessly never disrupting the song's flow. In the calming title track the guitar is front and center followed by a nice organ solo. This is one of those songs where the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. Stewart's gentle brush strokes are particularly impressive. "Mr. Meagles" is the most complex offering with wonderful organ runs and the drumming to match. The rest of the songs are just as noteworthy.

Ramshackle Serenade is an excellent jazz record that shows just how talented these three musicians are. I enjoyed it immensely.
