The Third Set is a blistering live album from the hard working act known as Marbin, and features ten songs recorded on the road during their 2012 USA tour. This one barely lets up for one instant, as the band, Dani Rabin (guitar), Danny Markovitch (sax), Jae Gentile (bass), and Justyn Lawrence (drums), blow through some of their most compelling material in scorching fashion. Don't believe me? Well, just check out the super-charged rendition of "Special Olympics", a metallic, jazz-fusion barnburner complete with scalding guitar work courtesy of Rabin and arrangements that will quite simply astound any lover of complex music. "Redline" also hits hard, with Markovitch & Rabin burning it up over stampeding rhythms, while the jazzy, funky, and almost 'metal' sounds of "The Depot" shows a band that can basically do it all. Just to show that the band can also take a step back and deliver something atmospheric & introspective, there's the gentle, haunting "Crystal Bells", as well as the majestic "Culture", but for the most part this is full throttle, full-on metallic jazz-fusion-prog (whatever you want to label it) of the highest order. "Splaw" even delivers rollicking funk that never stops grooving, as layers of guitar riffs pummel through bouncy rhythms and bluesy sax before Rabin's uncanny guitar solo just melts your speakers. This is hot stuff folks...let me just warn you now. Your ears will never be the same after hearing some of this material.
I could go on and on here, but I think you get the picture. No words I can say can fully describe just how ferocious these live recordings are; you'll just have to hear them to believe them. It's jazzy, it's heavy, it's progressive, it's...Marbin! Chalk up another winner from the folks at MoonJune Records.
