Grifter: The Return Of The Bearded Breathren

The first thing that struck me about this CD was that the cover appeared to feature Sea of Tranquility's very own Mark 'Tosh' Davies, however on closer inspection the bearded wonder in question doesn't have quite as much grey hair as my esteemed colleague. Formed back in 2003 in the South West of the UK Grifter have gradually seen their stock rise over the past three or four years, helped along the way by the band delivering some blistering live performances at Hard Rock Hell and Bloodstock festivals to name but two.

With songs taking their inspiration from having a crush on Princess Leia and their fondness for Guinness (or 'Black Gold' as they refer to it here) in their repertoire then Grifter are always going to be bundles of fun and energy and The Return of the Bearded Brethren doesn't disappoint. By and large they are all about mid tempo swampy grooves with a sound that is rooted in both the Deep South and the 70's. These latter influences are something they have in common with numerous other artists but of course it is all about the execution and the trio do a great job. Heavy on riffs and packed full of hooks they offer up nine originals that grab you by the scruff of the neck and don't let go until they top it all off by launching into a thumping cover of 'Fairies Wear Boots'. Most definitely an album to check out.
