Erlen Meyer: Erlen Meyer

Very early this morning, just before the sun came out, a jackhammer rattled and reverberated through the neighborhood. I got out of bed, closed the windows, and hoped to get a little more sleep but the sound had put me out of the mood. Worse, the noise continued pounding and pounding.

I'm not going to compare Erlen Meyer to a jackhammer. I doubt anyone would agree with the comparison and, let's face it, jackhammers are really annoying. My point, instead, is to comment on the way that certain kinds of noises push their way into our ears and don't easily let go. This album, with all its pounding, crazy, dissonant, passages, is kind of like that. The good news, though, is that it's pretty good. I admired the sheer bravado of the album, the way it gathers its materials and unleashes them on the listener's ears. Some will find the result intoxicating, an exciting rush of sound mixed with madness. Others will find it annoying, nothing more than noise organized into extreme metal.
