Captain Cougar: Åkerblomrörelsen

Captain Cougar is a folk rock band from Jyväskylä, Finland, made up of Laura Lehtola, on vocals; Juha Kujanpää, on keyboards; Jussi Petäjä, on guitar and vocals; Juha-Matti Rautiainen, on bass and vocals; and Janne Torvikoski, on drums and percussion.

Their latest album, Åkerblomrörelsen, is based on the story of the early twentieth century evangelical movement that became a sect in the Swedish speaking area of Ostrobothnia, in Finland. The movement was led by the prophesies of Maria Åkerblom, who stated she received them directly from God. Maria delivered her speeches in trances and travelled the country spreading the word.

Musically the album is a wonderful piece of work that helps capture the emotions during this moment in Finish history. The soft electric guitar work that opens Inner Desert is especially memorable. Laura Lehtola's voice captures that girlish emotion and innocence that must have been part of Maria's charm during the period. The lyrics throughout the album tell the story of this period emotionally and with authenticity. The supporting piano throughout the album is an anchor of power and the glory of the piece.

This is an interesting and touching coverage of this moment in time in Finnish history. If you are in search of something completely different with authenticity and sincerity, this is the album you are in search of.
