Channel Zero: Kill All Kings
Sixth studio album from veteran Belgian thrashers Channel Zero Kill All Kings is also their first since the death of drummer Phil Baheux and after being with Roadrunner for the 2011 release of Feed 'Em With A Brick this latest opus has been issued via Metal Blade Records. Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour and Soulfly) has stepped in for the studio sessions to replace Baheux and joins the nucleus of founders members Tino Olivier de Martino (bass) and Franky De Smet Van Damme (vocals) alongside guitarist Mikey Doling who is a relative newcomer having come on board when they reformed back in 2010.
Immediate and urgent opener 'Dark Passenger' rumbles along at a breakneck pace with the melodic vocal style of Van Damme making a strong impression. Produced by former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader this is old school Thrash blended with some of the elements of the contemporary melodic metal scene with the likes of 'Crimson Collider' and the title track boasting strong and aggressive riffing with some well executed soloing and clean vocals. There are one or two lesser moments across the twelve tracks notably 'Mind over Mechanics' which is a galloping by numbers tune that doesn't live up to its intriguing title but overall Kill All Kings is a defiant call to arms from Channel Zero and it is good to see that despite recent events Van Damme and Martino have decided to continue as a band. Twisting and turning final track 'Heart Stop' is a strong way to close the album with its hypnotic grooves and leaves the listener in no doubt that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary Thrash scene.
