Blue Oyster Cult-Secrets Revealed!, Martin Popoff's brand new book about the career of the legendary band from New York, is more an in-depth look at the discography of the band from their humble beginnings to the present day. Rather than spend hundreds of pages on every aspect of the bands career (although Popoff does give you lots of background on the band's early years), the book focuses more on detailed explanation and interviews regarding the bands discography. By in-depth, I mean "in-depth"-each band member, past and present, as well as some of BOC's chief lyric contributers like John Shirley and Sandy Pearlman, speak candidly about who wrote what, why, when, and the inspiration behind the songs. Seeing as BOC historically wrote tunes about science fiction, fantasy, UFO's, horror, and other non-mainstream topics, this aspect of the book will appeal to hardcore fans of the band. For the casual listener, Blue Oyster Cult-Secrets Revealed might be filled with "information overload." Yes, there is some gossip and inside info regarding the Bouchard brothers and their comings and goings from the band, the band's falling out with Pearlman, conflicts with record companies, etc., but what could be lacking for some are the road tales that are prevalent in Popoff's other recent book on the Canadian band Rush. There are also no photo's whatsoever, other than images of the album covers at the beginning of each chapter.
More a documenting of the rise and slow fall of a talented hard rock/metal band over the course of 30 plus years, Blue Oyster Cult-Secrets Revealed! is nontheless a worthwhile read for anyone who has followed and cherished the Blue Oyster Cult career over the years. Popoff's commentary if refreshing as always, especially when he gives input as to his favorite songs and albums from the band. It's obvious he is a fan, as only a fan would put forth the time and effort to get this book published.
