Blind Race: Come and Get It

This album cover reminds me of Twisted Sister's Come Out and Play. Both feature a covering of some sort, some kind of a hatch in this case, that is being opened from beneath by a pair of hands. Twisted Sister's album art suggested something coming from below, something menacing. This cover, I think, conveys something similar. The person connected to those hands is supposed to be menacing. The comparisons to Twisted Sister stop once the music starts. Come Out and Play marked a decline in critical and commercial interest in that band.

There's another connection: Patricia Highsmith's novel Strangers on a Train (and the Hitchcock movie of the same name) introduce a character named Bruno who claims to have driven a car blindfolded. Unable to see, Bruno took the car up to 160 mph. This band, Blind Race, is meant to suggest similar daring. The idea is simple—cover your eyes and drive. Oh, and don't die. It's all about reckless abandon, the adrenaline rush of uncertainty.

The music here starts out in a similar way—strong, aggressive, and hard driving. The first two tracks especially deliver a heavy punch, the kind of thing that will certainly get audiences roused and ready to stomp about. "Hopeless" slows things down a bit too much for my taste. The guitar solo on that track, however, was well worth a listen. It's a highlight of the album; check it out.

The last two tracks stick with a somewhat slower tempo. They fought hard, but weren't knockouts. There's a slight mid-career Metallica vibe on some of these tracks that didn't quite work for me. Fans of that style may enjoy these last two tracks. The band's publicist suggests connections to bands like Godsmack, Pantera, Stone Sour, and Five Finger Death Punch. That's probably right, though I don't hear as much of the Pantera thing as I might have. On the whole, this made for a good listen, but the best songs were the heavier and more aggressive ones. More of that stuff, please.
