"In Rob's world, Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny are contemporaries. Post-bop sax becomes a hard driving guitar, masterfully strangled, caressed, plucked, and picked over rivers of melodies and complex chordal harmonies."
Rob Levit is a renaissance man . He is a guitarist, composer, poet, painter , and teacher. Joined by Frank Russo on drums and Amy Shook on bass, Rob Levit demonstrates an exceptional gift for playing the six-string. A plethora of genres are showcased as Rob flip-flops in between impersonations of Pat Metheny and Wes Montgomery, with influences from John McLaughlin and Jimi Hendrix also alluded to. Most of the 13 tracks are originals but Mr Levit shows us his eclectic musical pallet by including tastefully rendered versions of Sting's Fields Of Gold , Bob Marley's Waiting In Vain as well as a uniquely sounding version of Footprints by the legendary Wayne Shorter. Although most tracks could be considered ballads, the trio does kick it up a notch on occasion, such as during M-Dive where Mr Levit gives his wah-wah a good workout in a psychedelic laden excursion.
The diversity of the tracks , the strength of the compositions, as well as the solid musicianship demonstrated by all 3 members make this an enjoyable disc. Fans of semi-acoustic jazz guitar will want to add another name to their list. The Rob Levit Trio have fused together diverging musical ideas into a cohesive musical entity.
