Madmans Esprit: Nacht

For the last couple of months, I've been watching Korean movies. I recently watched one entitled Doomsday Book, an anthology of three films that had a cool section about a robot monk. I also really liked Memories of Murder, and The Host. There are tons of great Korean films; these are just a few that I enjoyed of late.

I was pretty excited, given my recent foray into Korean cinema, to hear this debut album from a band out of Seoul, Korea. I don't know much about this band other than that they have released a demo and an EP prior to this release. I also know that the band is blending black metal with an eclectic range of things, including classical elements and Korean folk songs. Fortunately, the blend of things comes across mostly in the style of each song. In other words, the musical styles aren't competing with each other for dominance. The overall mood of the album is dark, but there is a sense of hope to the whole thing. I especially liked "The Lily and the Rose," one of the more eclectic offerings and also one of the most emotionally interesting.

On the whole, I thought the album was pretty good. I'm not sure that it is an essential album, but it has enough interesting moments to warrant a listen. Check out "The Lily and the Rose" and "Absolute Darkness" for sure.
