Disparager: Timeless, Ageless EP
Disparager, a relatively new band out of Brooklyn, NY, is looking to grab audiences with this debut release. I'm not sure who their target audience is exactly—the music here is a bit too varied in approach and in style. Some of the songs are heavy and aggressive whereas others are much mellower. The promotional materials connect the music to bands as various as Slayer and Isis. I'm not sure that these connections hold up too well. As I hear it, the music here is held together mostly by a pretty strong amount of vocal emotiveness. To my ears, this project has to do with matching vocal performance to lyrics in such a way that audiences can feel how sincere this whole thing is. It works pretty well when the band builds off of a mellower foundation, as in "At Least We Still Have Bon Iver." The other tracks are pretty good, but the vocals are often either too rough or too mellow for the music. Tracks like "Gratitude" and "R.I.P. Bill Hicks" were good, but less successful than others. This band is best at developing musical soundscapes that reach toward an Isis-like sound, but they have yet to figure out how they want to play up the heavier elements.
